I have received very shocking news today. It is shocking because in my entire working life, this is the first time I got a promotion. Haha, but then again, my entire working life could be described as vagabond. The CEO and dean of the college emailed a congratulations letter to me, for my promotion to a senior executive. It is very shocking for few reasons. First of all, I understand and knew from the start that the degree I took wasn’t going to be recognized in the civil service because it was done part-time. I had no problem with that anyway, because at that time, I just wanted to study and did not think of using it as a mean of promotion. I felt, if they didn’t recognize it, I’m sure I could find someone else who recognized it. With that, there was no pressure on my part. Come to think of it, my degree didn’t seem to have any impact on the promotion, because I’m sure it wasn’t the reason why I got promoted. Secondly, when I did my performance appraisal just 1 month ago, I read what my manager has written in the report, and though she did recommend a promotion, I didn’t think of it seriously because of what I heard about people having to write an essay to justify promotion, etc. I didn’t get to write any essay and hence was sure I wasn’t one of the people. I am not vocal about myself here. I just do my work and stay out of politics. Usually you would have to be very active and dynamic to leave a lasting impression on the high ranking officers, and it’s just not me. Right now, I am emailing short thank you notes to my manager, deputy director and dean to thank them for their support.

Promotion comes with another set of pressure. In future, there will be more work, the job scope will be larger and more demanding. I guess I’ll just take a step at a time.

That calls for a celebration!!
